EMS Stories
STEP is working on a collection of stories involving the entire EMS community. The purpose of this collection is not only to share interesting vignettes with other EMS providers, but also to give the non-EMS community a peek at EMS’ heart and spirit, and perhaps to encourage others to volunteer or work in EMS. Desired stories may include:
Inspirational stories - cases in which the writer/reader is inspired by the patient/family/responder’s reaction to illness/injury or was emotionally touched by the case
Dramatic stories - cases in which the writer/reader is intrigued by a complicated or exciting or action-filled case such as a rescue
Humorous stories - cases which had something humorous in its presentation, in the EMS response to the case, or in something that was said or done by the patient or others
Educational stories - cases in which the writer discovered a pearl of wisdom to share with other providers, either by learning something new or by learning a lesson from a mistake such as jumping to wrong conclusions
Teamwork stories - cases where several EMS agencies worked together, or EMS worked with other providers such as fire, police or hospital staff for a good outcome, or to cope with a dramatic situation
Believe It or Not stories - cases which have components so unique that they would have not been thought possible or probable before they occurred, or in which there was a surprise in store for the responders
Stories may be edited for suitable length, style, or clarity of language, and names may be altered as needed. Contributors will be acknowledged in the book, but not tied to the particular story submitted to preserve patient, agency or medic confidentiality. Presently, this is a local project, but depending on its success, there is a possibility that it may be published in the future. Any publishing costs incurred will be the responsibility of STEP, and any profits, if published, will be used to support STEP’s educational efforts.
